Through Big Brothers Big Sisters, children ages 6-18 are paired with an adult volunteer. These volunteers serve as mentors to the youth while also providing support and encouragement. The mission of the organization is to “provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.”

CASA volunteers are advocates for abused and neglected children in America’s legal and social systems. Volunteers are appointed by judges to specific cases to ensure that each child receives proper care and is placed in a safe, permanent home.

The Emporia Rescue Mission is a Christian based organization that provides free housing for men, a community food kitchen, and a free clothing boutique. The Men’s Shelter offers three different programs for residents, each of which is designed to help individuals improve their overall quality of life. The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP) Program provides presentations, instruction, interventions, referrals, and tobacco cessation plans to the students and staff of Emporia State University. The ADAP “seeks to support students, faculty, and staff in creating and maintaining a campus environment that encourages and supports healthy lifestyles where the misuse or abuse of alcohol, and the use of tobacco and other drugs has minimal impact on the academic progress of individual students and the learning environment of the campus community."

Hetlinger Developmental Services Inc., is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting people with developmental disabilities in Lyon, Morris, Chase, and Wabaunsee counties. The Lyon County Attorney’s Office prosecutes criminal cases in Lyon County. Within the Attorney’s Office is the Victim/Witness Program. This program is designed to help victims and witnesses through the legal process with the help of a volunteer. These volunteers provide support for the individuals while also assisting with the daily work in the office. Attendant Care Workers at the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas provide one-on-one structure and support for clients in emotional or psychiatric distress. The Plumb Place provides temporary emergency shelter and longer term transitional housing services to adult women in the local community.
